Verbena stricta. Hoary Vervain stands out by the distinct spike of small purple flowers found blooming in the summer months. This species is visited by many different pollinators and the seeds serve as a food source to songbirds and smaller mammals. You may commonly find Hoary Vervain on the roadside across much of Minnesota, growing from 12-36 inches in full sun and dry mesic-mesic soils.
