Seedling Height: 12-24 in
Loose Airy Shrub that often forms dense thickets. Native to Minnesota. Bright green foliage in summer, slightly yellowish in fall. Late leafing shrub. Leaf type is alternate bipinnately compound. Purplish blue flower with orange anthers about 1/3" long in June on 3-6" long upright spikes. Root system is fibrous, spreading, holds soil from erosion and especially on sandy sites. Use for conservation plantings along stream banks for erosion control, open bottomlands, edges or marshlands, and wet prairies along rivers. Dense shrub provides cover to many wildlife species near wetland and riparian areas. With the introduction of symbiotic bacteria will fix nitrogen in ground. Adapted to a variety of soils. Tolerates wet areas. Not drought tolerant.
