Sand Cherry- Prunus besseyi

Seedling Height: 12-24 in

A small, winter-hardy, relatively short-lived shrub native to the Northern Great Plains. Edible fruits which are dark purple to black. Dark silvery-green to gray-green foliage, lighter beneath. Fall color is yellow. Leaf is 1—2” long and 1/2—1” wide. Prefers a well-drained loamy soil. Tolerates rather inhospitable, hot, dry conditions. Root system is medium in depth and spreading. Fair drought tolerance. Small to medium shrub for windbreaks. Fruits are relished by many songbirds. Sweet, purplish black, 3/4” long fruits in July and August. White blooms in late April to early May and the shrub literally glows with pure white, 1/2” flowers.
